Di Girolamo elected IBSA President

Italy’s Sandro Di Girolamo was elected President of the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) at the organisation’s Extraordinary General Assembly in Amman, Jordan, on Monday (11 October).

Di Girolamo, who is also President of the Italian Paralympic Sports Federation for the Visually Impaired and Blind (FISPIC), overcame incumbent Jannie Hammershoi of Denmark.

Bids to host 2022 World Para Table Tennis Championships invited

The International Table Tennis Federation invites bids to host the 2022 World Para Championships. It is the most prestigious of all Para Table Tennis tournaments.

Organised in the fourth quarter of 2022 with a maximum of 340 players accepted, the tournament involves seven competition days.

World Triathlon Para Championships 2021 to take place in Abu Dhabi in November

Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC) has announced that the World Triathlon Para Championships will be added to the event schedule at the upcoming World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi presented by Daman taking place on Yas Island on 5-6 November. After sadly missing out on the 2020 World Championships due to the pandemic, the world’s best para triathletes will now gather on Yas Island on the first weekend of November, just two months after their incredible performances at the Paralympic races in Tokyo.

Sabrina Ibáñez: A human being can never be broken

Like many of you, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Paralympic Games. But as luck would have it, I now find myself immobilised following a pelvic fracture last week.

While I’m sorely disappointed that I will not to be joining my colleagues in Tokyo this year, I did have reason to celebrate following the launch of the WeThe15 campaign that aims to end discrimination towards persons with disabilities.

World Goalball Day to take place on 12 September

The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball has announced that the first World Goalball Day will take place on 12 September 2021, aiming to ride the wave of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

In 2021 goalball is celebrating an incredible 75 years since it was pioneered by Austrian Hans Lorenzen and Germany’s Sepp Reindle in 1946. The pair developed the game to help with the rehabilitation of World War II veterans.

Blind football women’s World Championships pushed back to 2023

The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Blind Football have announced that the first Women’s World Championships will now take place at the 2023 IBSA World Games in Birmingham, Great Britain.

The competition was originally scheduled for November 2021 in Enugu, Nigeria. However due to national restrictions currently in place as a result of COVID-19, it is no longer practical for it to go ahead this year.

IWBF to implement changes to Classification Rules and Regulations

Changes to the IWBF Classification Rules and Regulations for international wheelchair basketball are to be implemented by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) from 1st October 2021.

In January 2020, IPC’s Governing Board declared IWBF non-compliant with the 2015 IPC Athlete Classification Code, and set a deadline for compliance to be met by no later than 31 August 2021 for the sport to remain as part of the Paralympic movement and be reinstated to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games sport programme.

Cairo to close 2021 with Sitting Volleyball World Cup

Egypt’s capital city, Cairo, will conclude an action-packed 2021 after being confirmed as hosts of the Sitting Volleyball World Cup from December 10 to 15 at the Cairo International Stadium.

The biggest sitting volleyball event in the World ParaVolley calendar will feature 16 teams each for the men’s and women’s competitions all competing for the title. A lot is at stake at the World Cup as winning teams will be guaranteed a spot at the 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championships in Hangzhou, China in May.

Final IWAS World Games programme released

The International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) has revealed that athletics, powerlifting and cerebral palsy (CP) football will form the final programme for the 2021 IWAS World Games in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal, from 7-13 October.

The confirmation comes after countries were invited to register their interest in the sports on the preliminary programme which also featured swimming, as well as wheelchair cricket and beach ParaVolley for the first IWAS Guttmann Games.
