Wimbledon to expand wheelchair draw sizes from 2024

The evolution of wheelchair tennis at the four Grand Slam tournaments is set to take another step forward this July after the All England Club announced that The 2024 Championships, will see the men’s and women’s wheelchair draws double in size.

Fields of eight men and eight women have contested wheelchair singles draws at Wimbledon since 2016, with men’s and women’s doubles draws of four partnerships having made their debuts at The Championships in 2005 and 2009, respectively.

Reflecting the ever-increasing popularity of wheelchair tennis at Wimbledon and the other three Grand Slam tournaments, 2024 will now see the Wimbledon men’s and women’s wheelchair singles competitions increase from eight to a 16 player draws, and the doubles competitions increase from four to eight teams.

The increase in draw sizes means that wheelchair tennis competition at Wimbledon will this year begin one day earlier, on Tuesday 9 July.

With quad singles and doubles draws having made their debut at Wimbledon in 2019 before doubling in size to an eight singles draw and a four-team doubles draw in 2022, the quad singles and doubles draws will remain unchanged in 2024.
